The match between Brazil and Costa Rica will be played in St. Petersburg on June 22nd. The match will start at 14.00 (CET), and both teams have a lot of pressure on their shoulders. Costa Rica and Brazil have played against one another several times, so they know each other very well.

Before Costa Rica’s match against Serbia, we were quite sure about the fact that Serbia would surprise. And yes, it happened that way. So, we were not disappointed by Costa Rica, we were just acknowledging that Serbia has a fairly good team. Based on the opening matches, this should be the match between the best and the worst team in the group, meaning that Brazil should win easily.

The question is whether or not they will be lucky and get an early goal. The longer the match will last without a goal for Brazil, the worse feeling it will give the players, and it will lead to a bad mood for Neymar, which later will influence the entire team.

But, to be honest… we really do hope Brazil will get into it and that we will be presented with some real samba football from the Brazilians in this match.

Nobody expected Costa Rica to qualify for the knockout stage during the FIFA World Cup in 2018. They ended up winning their group, leaving nations like Uruguay, Italy, and England behind them. Can they do the same once again?

In 2014 Costa Rica won 3-1 against Uruguay, 1-0 against Italy and played 0-0 against England. Those are all brilliant results. In 2018 they will play against Serbia in their first match, followed by a match against Brazil, before the final match of the group stage will be played against Switzerland. All bookmakers believe that Brazil and Switzerland will win this group and qualify for the knockout stage, but Costa Rica surprised us four years ago… can they do it again?

Costa Rica looks strong in the preparation before the World Cup. They won 3-0 against Nothern Ireland, they just lost 2-0 against England, and they have one more friendly match coming up against Belgium before the tournament.

I just watched their game against England, and it was clear all the way that England has a stronger team than Costa Rica. But, so did Italy, Uruguay, and England during the 2014 tournament. Costa Rica doesn’t have the strongest team, but they have some good players, and they have a fantastic keeper in Keylor Navas. England won the match and they deserved the victory, but if Costa Rica had been luckier in some situations, they could have scored one goal or two, and the result would have looked much nicer to them. They were lucky in 2014, so without that necessary luck, they will not have a chance in 2018 either. That could be seen clearly during their match against England, and I believe that is what we will see in their friendly match against Belgium on June 11th as well.

On June 14th in 2014 Costa Rica got a flying start on the World Cup by beating Uruguay 3-1. That was quite a sensational result, but it got even better as they won 1-0 against Italy six days later. They ended the group stage with a 0-0 result against England. They won the first match in the knockout stage against Greece after penalties, but the Netherlands became a too hard opponent in the quarterfinal (they lost after penalties).

Costa Rica seems to be strong in 2018 as well. They have played good football in their friendly matches leading up to the FIFA World Cup, and even though they lost 2-0 against England on June 7th, they still had their chances. There is no doubt that there are much better teams, but if Costa Rica has luck on their side, they can create magic and do well. But, if they want to bring magic to the FIFA World Cup, they will need to start with a victory against Serbia on June 18th. Will they be able to do that?
